Last Call! School Directory

Hello Elementary School Families!

Each year the Friends of Buker, Cutler, and Winthrop compile a school directory for your convenience. In addition to student contact information, the directory includes school information (staff, class lists, school calendar, etc.) and Friends information (officers, fundraisers, room parents, etc.)  Directories are distributed in October in both paper and PDF format.  Inclusion in the directory is completely optional, but most families find it a very helpful resource in connecting with others in all three elementary schools. The directory is intended solely for the personal use of Hamilton-Wenham elementary school students and their families; any other use is strictly prohibited.

If you would like to be included in the 2017-2018 Directory, please visit
2017-2018 Elementary Directory Form to complete a short and simple online form.

The deadline to complete the form is SEPTEMBER 8.

Please note that completion of this form will constitute permission to include
your information in the 2017-2018 Directory.

If you do not complete the online form, your family will not be included in the directory.

We welcome volunteers to help us proofread the draft directory in September, which always benefits from a fresh set of eyes.  If you have any questions or would like to volunteer to proofread, please email Anna Siedzik at annaisiedzik@gmail.com or Stephanie Stein at steinsl@gmail.com.

Final note:  If you prefer NOT to be included in the directory, please contact Anna or Stephanie so that they know your family has opted not to participate.

Room Parents Needed!

Looking forward to the new school year!!

Each year, every class at Buker relies on Room Parents to assist the teacher with a variety of tasks throughout the school year.  It is also a great way of getting involved with your child’s school year experience.

Some of the Room Parents’ duties include:

1.     Compiling a list of the parent names, phone numbers and email addresses for the class to be used as a contact list for teacher requests.
2.     Communicate special classroom events.
3.     Coordinating teacher gifts at holidays and /or at the end of the school year.
4.     Recruiting volunteers for the various projects and/or field trips during the year.
5.     Fulfilling a variety of requests from your teacher.
6.     Serving as Friends of Buker Liaison for your classroom.

As the school year begins there are many events to plan for and we need Room Parents in place as soon as possible.  Please consider helping your child’s classroom teacher this school year and volunteer to be a Room Parent.

If you are interested in being a Room Parent for this school year, please email Donna Heimlich at donna.ray@usa.net.

THANK YOU for your interest and SUPPORT!!

Sincerely,
Donna Ray Heimlich
Room Parent Coordinator

Mr. O's Welcome!

August 22, 2017

Dear Buker Families,

Welcome back for the start of another school year.  I am excited to welcome our students back in just a few days.  These last days of summer vacation seem to move along so quickly as we all get ready for the rush of September.  I hope that you have all had an enjoyable and relaxing break and that our students look forward to the school year ahead.

Each year brings change to our staff community and I am pleased to share with you our new hires for 2017-2018.  New to Buker but not to the district, Annie Drewes joins us as a moderate special education liaison from Cutler.  Jessica Bernardo will be teaching 3rd grade and Erica Aikins will be teaching 4th grade.  Maggie Schack will be teaching our PE classes and Kristen Brousseau will be teaching some of our art classes.  Sue Stibel joins our district as the K-5 literacy coordinator and will work with all of our elementary staff.  Denise Ellis will share time between Buker and Cutler as our speech and language assistant.  Christina Chow will take on a special education teaching assistant position as an Endicott Fellow.  Maureen Lydon joins our special education team as a teaching assistant.  I am excited to work with all of our new staff and I am confident our students will enjoy them as well.

The school is shining and ready for students because of all of the hard work put in by our custodial team of Mark Legere and Phil Coleman.  I would also like to acknowledge the excellent work of Nathan Reed, Mark Baumeister and Graham Dyer, our high school workers who supported us this summer.  Together, they took on the huge task of cleaning a school and preparing it for another year.

Our summer readers have been busy and I have enjoyed receiving your cards.  We have quite a display growing outside of the office.  If you are interested in attending our Summer Readers’ Pancake Breakfast on September 8th, make sure to get your cards in to the office.

Enjoy these remaining days of summer!

Transportation Procedures: Please read.

What time can I drop my child off?
There is playground supervision at 8:15am.
Students should not come to school prior to that time.

Where are the bus routes posted?
The bus routes are posted on the district website.
Can't find your stop?  Please email Transportation@hwschools.net
My child rides the bus:
Buses will enter from Arbor Street and travel down School Street to Perkins Street.  Students will be dropped off in the morning and boarded in the afternoon at the School Street entrance of the building.
My child is picked up by car:
Parents in cars dropping off and picking up students will enter School Street via Arbor Street and TURN LEFT to travel along the driveway (passing the Superintendent's Office on right).  Students will be dropped off and picked up in a moving car line at the Door #15 entrance, located adjacent to our driveway.
Please stay in your car.  Buker Staff will assist younger children.  If your child uses a booster seat, please put it on the right side of the back seat, for easier assistance.
Wenham Police have asked that parents do not park along Perkins Street.   This creates a safety issue. Parents choosing to walk with their child in the morning to the playground, or picking up at the front door in the afternoon, please use the School Street parking lot.   Cars parked along the field on Perkins Street impede the passage of our buses and create a safety issue.

My child walks home:
Students who are walking or riding a bicycle home will be dismissed through the front entrance of the school.  Please use the crosswalk at Perkins Street.
Students in grades K-3 will only be dismissed to a parent or designated caretaker.

Please refer to the diagram below for a visual overview of the plan.

How do I get blog posts in my email?
Buker School uses this blog for communication to families about upcoming school events.
Go to http://bukerblog.blogspot.com
Please enter your email address to receive the posts in your email.
This is a two-step process, and once you have confirmed, using the link sent to you, you will receive new posts directly in your email.

How do I learn more about the parents' group, Friends of Buker?
The Friends of Buker have a website Friends of Buker!
Bookmark it for a quick reference to meeting and school event information.

What about Twitter?
Please follow us on @BukerSchool for daily happenings at the school.

How do I find when upcoming important dates are?
Bookmark the Buker calendar  on the website for school events, and/or print out the district calendar for vacation/holiday reference:  HWRSD 2017-108 Calendar

Where are the supply lists?
Bookmark the Buker homepage and scroll down to "Buker News".  This is also the place where you can access the classroom websites for important information throughout the school year.

What about summer reading?
Take part in our Summer Reading Challenge, and send in three postcards with a brief description of the books.
(Mr. O'Donoghue, Buker School, 1 School Street, Wenham, MA 01984).
Your child is then invited to come to the Annual Summer Reading Pancake Breakfast, Friday, September 8th, 8am-8:30am.

What should I do when my child will be tardy or absent?
Call the Buker Safe Arrival line:  978-468-8400 or send an email to Buker Safe Arrival.

How do I make a change to my child's dismissal plan for the day?
If you need to make a change to your child's dismissal plans
please do so BEFORE SCHOOL, and send a note in to school with your child.
Please make sure your child knows what the dismissal plan is before he/she leaves in the morning.

Emailing the teacher during the school day is not advisable.  In the event of an unavoidable need to change plans during the school day, you may contact the office.  Please remember it is disruptive to the classroom to have last minute changes to dismissal plans.

Summer Readers!

If your child took part in the Summer Reader Challenge , please mark your calendar for the celebratory Pancake Breakfast:  Friday, September 8th (8a-8:30a).

Pancakes and sausage are served up by Mr. O. and Mrs. Putnam for all the readers who sent in postcards and drawings of three books they read this summer.  (Not to worry, there will be plenty of time to serve our kids who ride the bus!)
