Notes from the School Nurse

·      Please remember to check your child for ticks after outdoor activities.  Ticks can transmit Lyme and other diseases.  Information on Lyme disease can be found here on the CDC website: http://www.cdc.gov/lyme/

I recommend doing a casual check through your child’s hair daily for lice, whether while brushing her hair or while he is brushing his teeth.  Add it to your bedtime routine.

·     If you notice your child scratching his/her head, it is especially important to take the time to check for head lice. If you have any questions or concerns, I am happy to help. Do not ignore head scratching!  Although a nuisance, lice thankfully do not transmit any diseases.

·       If you do find lice on your child, please let the school nurse know as well as any close friends/contacts.  Did you know that studies show that lice are less often transmitted in school and more often transmitted at playdates and sleepovers when children have direct head-to-head contact?

Want more information on lice?  Not sure what you’re looking for?  See my Buker Health Website information page.

PreK Happenings!

Book Discussion: Join Us!

Are you interested in learning about childhood anxieties and the potential impact on functioning at home and in school?  You are invited to join our Buker School Community Read of Dr. Lawrence Cohen's The Opposite of Worry.

"Whether it's the monster in the closet or the fear that arises from new social situations, school, or sports, anxiety can be especially challenging and maddening for children.  And since anxiety has a mind of its own, logic and reassurance often fail, leaving parents increasingly frustrated on how to help.

Now Lawrence J. Cohen, Ph.D., the author of Playful Parenting, provides a special set of tools to handle childhood anxiety.  Offering simple, effective strategies that build connection through fun, play and empathy, Dr. Cohen helps parents

  • teach children the basics of the body's "security system':  alert, alarm, assessment, and all clear
  • promote tolerance of uncertainty and discomfort by finding the balance between outright avoidance and "white-knuckling" through a fear
  • find lighthearted ways to release tension in the moment
  • tackle their own anxieties so they can stay calm when a child is distressed
  • bring children out of their anxious thoughts and into their bodies by using relaxation, breathing, writing, drawing, and playful roughhousing
With this insightful resource of easy-to-implement solutions and strategies, you and your child can experience the opposite of anxiety and fear an embrace connection, trust, and joy."
-From the back cover of The Opposite of Worry by Dr. L. Cohen

Curriculum Night: September 20th

We made a few changes to the format of our annual curriculum night for this year.
Some of our classroom teachers would like to try making this evening more conversational through an open house style experience, while others will try a combination of open house style with a structured presentation.

The objectives for the evening are for parents to connect with their child’s teacher, get an overview of the grade level curriculum, and learn about the classroom expectations.
After the event, we will solicit your feedback on whether or not we were able to meet these objectives following this revised format.

The schedule for the evening will be:
