Winter Assistance Fund

The impending arrival of winter and the holiday season is an exciting and joyous time.  For many, however, it can also be a source of financial stress.   The additional financial burdens placed on families during this time of year can be overwhelming.  With the increase in heating costs, holiday expenses and other winter essentials, it can be hard to manage everything.

There are two wonderful resources in the Hamilton/Wenham area that can provide assistance to families who may be experiencing financial burdens.  One is the WISSH (Wenham Issues of Social Service and Housing) Program, which offers confidential financial and social service assistance to Wenham residents in need of help in emergency situations.  Any Wenham family that meets the basic financial requirements may apply for up to $500 per year for such things as utilities, medical bills, food, etc.  If you are interested in applying for assistance or looking for more information, please contact Kathy Hughes, Adjustment Counselor, at 978-626-0873 or the WISSH Director at 978-468-5520 x9.

The other program that is available to both Hamilton and Wenham residents is the Hamilton-Wenham Holiday Assistance Fund.  This confidential program was established to assist Hamilton-Wenham Regional School District students and their families who have experienced a hardship due to unemployment, family illness, or some other circumstance.  Due to limited funds, it is not intended to be a long term assistance program or for families to use repeatedly, unless there are extenuating circumstances.  Assistance would be in the form of gift cards for winter clothing and/or food or, in some instances, gifts of essential clothing such as winter coats, hats, pajamas, socks, etc.  If your family is having the type of difficulties stated above and you would like to request assistance, please contact Kathy Hughes immediately.

If you are interested in making a monetary donation to the program, you may also contact Kathy Hughes.

Community Service: Cape Ann Animal Aid

Hello, I'm Sadie Condon and I'm a sixth grade student at Miles River Middle School. I'm a former Buker student and I'm doing a community service project with Cape Ann Animal Aid in Gloucester.  I'm  helping to donate items to animals and I'm hoping you can help.  Cape Ann Animal Aid...."is a non-profit, no kill organization dedicated to facilitating appropriate placement of adoptable animals and enhancing the lives of all companion animals by promoting respect and well-being through education and outreach."  They are always in need of food and other items.

Below are the items I need to collect:

Wet food for cats and dogs
Soft training treats for dogs
Martingale style collars
Stainless steel littler pans
Stainless steel or ceramic dishes
Hard rubber/plastic dog toys
Cat cleaning wipes
Nyla bones
Frontline plus for cats and kittens and dogs

They would also accept gift cards for PetCo or a supermarket.

I have a big box outside the front office where your children can place the donated items.  I will bring the items to Cape Ann Animal Aid around November 10th.  Thank you so much for helping.
