Poet-In-Residence Steven Ratiner

Sponsored by a STARS Residency grant from the Massachusetts Cultural Council, Steven Ratiner’s residency allows students to experience the examination, discussion and creation of art.
This program focuses on an open-ended, yet structured discussion of visual art designed to increase students’ critical thinking, language and literacy skills.
This 6 week program will run for Grades 3-5, and began on January 6.

"Steven Ratiner is working with the third, fourth, and fifth grades to develop their 'poet's voice'.  His enthusiasm for writing, and for experiencing the world, helps students strengthen their writing skills and interests.  Through a dynamic workshop approach, using multiple experiences and props, he challenges students to sharpen their observation skills and to come up with the most exact wording to express their ideas for their listeners.  Many students who do not consider themselves to be writers often surprisingly discover that they, too, have talents and insights that they capably express through this form of the written word.  Their skills as writers in other areas often grow at the same time.  Our students become 'poets in residence' through this artist's residency with us.

Many thanks to Jessica Connors, Friends of Buker, for once again supporting this program, and securing the grant.”
