Message from the Health Office:
We have had some confirmed cases of the flu at Buker school.  See the following “Flu Guide for Parents” for information on treatment and prevention.   Symptoms of the flu can include fever, cough, stuffy nose, body aches, headache, feeling tired, and sometimes vomiting and diarrhea (more common in children).  If you suspect that your child has the flu, it is essential that you keep him/her home from school to prevent the spread of illness to others and so that your child can rest and recover.  If your child has a fever, keep him/her home until he/she is fever free (defined as 100 degrees F) without fever-reducing medicine.

Thanks to grants from the Mass Cultural Council and Friends of the Arts, author in residence George O'Connor captivated our students.

Many thanks to parents Ashley Murphy and Emily Leland for handling all the arrangements for Mr. O'Connor to make this residency enriching for all our students.

Are you looking to get more involved in the New Year? Does your son or daughter enjoy music or art class, or participate in the BCW band or chorus? Then consider joining the Hamilton-Wenham Friends of the Arts! We are actively seeking new members and are looking for parents who are interested in making a difference in how the arts are supported in our schools. You needn’t have any prior experience as an artist/performer/musician, nor does your child have to be a part of the arts program at Buker; you just need to have a passion for the arts and the HW community.
Please join us at our next meeting on Wednesday, January 9th at 7pm in the HW High School library. If you want to learn more about our mission, we encourage you to visit www.hwfota.org, or email Lexie Riordan at Alexandra_Riordan@hotmail.com. We look forward to seeing you in January!

Buker Bulletin: 12/20/18

Outdoor Recess

Reminder: Even with the cooler temperatures that winter brings, we try to get out for recess every day. On days it's too cold to be outside in the morning, we will still try to get outside if it warms up later in the day. Please have students bring outdoor clothing every day. Thanks!

Friday's Concert

It will be great to see everyone at Friday's winter concert. A couple quick notes:
  • Parking will be tight. We know that. Where ever you end up parking, please make sure there is room for emergency vehicles to pass.
  • If you want to dismiss your student at the end of the concert you will need to (a) go back to your child's classroom with them, and (b) sign them out from the classroom. This will allow us to keep track of who has been dismissed early and who hasn't.

Many thanks to parent Sandra Roman for coordinating the Staff Holiday Breakfast.
The cafeteria was transformed into a serene space, with a beautiful selection of food and the gifts continued the pampering theme.  We're so lucky to have such a supportive parent community.

Friday, 12/21 is a full day of school.  Our annual holiday assembly will start at 1:45pm in the Auditorium.  Parents are welcome to attend.  Students will return to school on Wednesday, January 2, 2019.

Reminder - Read-A-Thon Pledges Due Tomorrow
Thanks to everyone who has been collecting pledges for our Read-A-Thon, the proceeds of which will benefit our playground patio.

Just a friendly reminder that pledge sheets and pledges should be returned to Buker by tomorrow, Friday, December 21st. We are looking forward to a fun morning of students reading books of their choice!

Thank you again for supporting our Read-A-Thon!

Buker Media Center
December News

All students have been learning how to code during their time in the Media Center this month. The students used a combination of iPad apps, Khan Academy and robots to learn coding.

The students in kindergarten have been learning how to make simple algorithms. We began with a fun app called Kodable. The students learn how to direct a character around a maze using simple arrows and conditional statements. Then we switched over to Scratch Jr. where they used backgrounds, characters and programmed blocks to animate scenes.

In first and second grade the students built upon their previous Scratch Jr. knowledge. New programming blocks were introduced and the students were challenged again to create animated scenes. The blocks used were triggering, motion, looks, sound, control and ending blocks. Next, the students programmed Beebots and Lego Wedo robots.

The third and fourth grades were introduced to the Hopscotch app. They used the app to create a Crossy Road game. The blocks are more sophisticated and the students needed to build off of earlier Scratch Jr. knowledge. The students were challenged but completely engaged. The students finished the unit by programming Lego Wedo and Ozobot robots.

The fifth grade used Khan Academy to learn more about programming. Khan Academy has a great program that teaches Javascript to students. The students learn the actual code and they create drawings and fun animations. Then the students finished the unit by programming Ozobot robots.

These units are always a lot of fun for the students.

Let's Collect Read-A-Thon Pledges to Make Buker Game Day Happen!
Just a reminder that Buker is having a Read-A-Thon on Friday, December 21st in the morning. This fun event will raise funds for the final phase of our playground’s capital campaign – a patio to be built for current and future Buker students and the community to enjoy. If our school meets the participation goal of 100 students collecting pledges, each class will have a Game Day where students bring board or card games of their choice to Buker.

During our Read-A-Thon, each child will be given the opportunity to read a book of his or her choice for one hour. Prior to the event, students are welcome to collect pledges from family, friends and neighbors. No pledge is too large or too small, but the suggested pledge amount is $5.00. Please return pledge forms to Buker as soon as possible to help us tally our participation numbers. Pledges are due by Friday, December 21st.

A Read-A-Thon flyer and pledge sheet were recently sent home in your child’s backpack folder. We are also including one here for download. We appreciate your family’s participation in this benefit!
