WINTER ASSISTANCE FUND

The impending arrival of winter and the holiday season is an exciting and joyous time.  For many, however, it can also be a source of financial stress.   The additional financial burdens placed on families during this time of year can be overwhelming.  With the increase in heating costs, holiday expenses and other winter essentials, it can be hard to manage everything.

There are two wonderful resources in the Hamilton/Wenham area that can provide assistance to families who may be experiencing financial burdens.  The Hamilton-Wenham Holiday Assistance Fund is a confidential program that was established to assist Hamilton-Wenham Regional School District students and their families who have experienced a hardship due to unemployment, family illness, or some other circumstance.  Due to limited funds, it is not intended to be a long term assistance program or for families to use repeatedly, unless there are extenuating circumstances.

Assistance would be in the form of gift cards for clothing and/or food or, in some instances, gifts of essential clothing such as winter coats, hats, pajamas, socks, etc.   If your family is having financial difficulties and you would like to request assistance, please contact Kathleen Hughes, Adjustment Counselor, immediately at  k.hughes@hwschools.net or at 978-626-0873.  If you are interested in making a monetary donation to the program, you may also contact Kathleen Hughes.

The other program is the WISSH (Wenham Issues of Social Service and Housing) Program, which offers confidential financial and social service assistance to Wenham residents in need of help in emergency situations.  Any Wenham family that meets the basic financial requirements may apply for up to $500 per year for such things as utilities, medical bills, food, etc.  If you are interested in applying for assistance or looking for more information, please contact the WISSH Director at 978-468-5520 at extension 9.

School Council

Buker is looking for 3 parents to serve on it's School Council. Under Massachusetts law, every public school needs to establish a School Council as an advisory group. This group ensures that parents can contribute their voices to the decisions that drive the school.

The Buker School Council will meet four times over the course of the year, on Thursday afternoons after school. The Council will look at the Buker School Improvement Plan and examine how last spring's parent survey can help inform possible changes moving forward.

The Council is hoping to have it's first meeting on Thursday, September 27 to review the Buker School Improvement Plan before it's presented to the School Committee.

If you have any questions, please contact Ben Schersten (b.schersten@hwschools.net).
